Product liability questions for fire-safety equipment sellers

Understand what to ask about fire extinguishers before relying on a product liability policy. Start with your actual range and the proposed terms.

Smaller sellers can apply. Coverage subject to underwriting.

A product description comes before a policy comparison

Fire extinguishers are sold for a specific protective purpose. An insurance conversation should identify the actual models, their stated use and your role in sourcing or importing them, rather than stopping at home safety equipment.

Use the questions below to discuss proposed policy wording with an insurer. They identify points to clarify; they do not describe guaranteed Assureful coverage or imply that every product in this guide can be insured.

Three questions for your insurer

  • Is the protective function understood?

Describe the extinguisher type, extinguishing agent and stated uses. Ask whether the proposed policy has exclusions or conditions relevant to fire-safety products or alleged failure to perform.

  • Is your importer or brand-owner role included?

Explain whether you resell, import or private-label the product. Ask how that role is reflected in the insured business description and whether additional supplier information is needed.

  • What about servicing or refilling?

If your business also services, installs or refills extinguishers, disclose those activities. Ask whether they require different coverage rather than assuming a product-sales policy includes them.

When the product range changes

A business sells extinguishers and also offers refilling. A description limited to online retail leaves out an activity that needs review. Ask the insurer to address both activities explicitly.

This is an illustrative situation, not a claim example or an eligibility decision. Keep a written record of what you disclosed and the insurer's response, especially where a new product or activity needs further review.

Read beyond the headline limit

For affected categories, Amazon's November update specifies at least $1 million per occurrence and in the aggregate. The occurrence limit applies to a covered occurrence; the aggregate limits covered claims over the applicable period, subject to the policy wording. A certificate showing those figures does not explain all exclusions, deductibles or conditions.

Ask about the insured business name, products, activities, policy period and applicable territory. Review the full terms and Amazon's current proof requirements before relying on a quote or certificate.

Common questions

Does a $1 million certificate prove every product is covered?

No. The policy's product scope, exclusions, conditions and other terms matter. Ask the insurer to review the actual range; a certificate summarises certain policy information and does not replace the full wording.

Can I apply with less than $10,000 in monthly sales?

Yes. Assureful's application accepts sales figures below $10,000 a month. Use your actual sales or a reasonable projection. An estimate does not guarantee product eligibility, an issued policy or Amazon's acceptance of your documents.

For Mainland China sellers, Amazon’s separate AIA requirement also applies from November 2: new policies submitted must be obtained through AIA; compliant third-party policies submitted beforehand can continue until expiry. Assureful’s current application supports businesses based in the United States and Hong Kong.
